Trees, Garden Vandelized

There was some sad news over past couple of days regarding the treatment of neighborhood greenery.

On or around Monday night, two young trees near 17th & P had several branches torn from them. This is troubling for a number of reasons. Saplings are extremely vulnerable, and the longer it takes for saplings to be planted and grow, the longer it will be before the neighborhood can enjoy shade from them.

Also troubling, there is a triangle garden on the east side of Dupont Circle that Commissioner Phil Carney tends to, along with a friend of his. This garden was also vandelized, as you can see from the above photo (photo courtesy Phil Carney).
This is just a gentle reminder that we all need to take care of our neighborhood. If you see someone injuring or vandelizing plants, please call the police.
On another note, I'll be submitting a list of empty tree boxes in my SMD to DDOT's Urban Forestry Division in the next week or two so that saplings can be planted during the 2009-2010 planting season. Last year at this time I submitted a long list of trees for planting, none of which were. If you know of any empty tree boxes, please let me know by emailing me at jack@friendsofjack.com and I'll include those in my list to DDOT.
