In February, the Mayor, along with then-Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation Clark Ray broke ground on the parks at S and T Streets, NW, at 17th Street, after years of delay. At the groundbreaking, then-Director Ray assured the community that work on the parks would be completed and a ribbon cutting ceremony held by Memorial Day.
Unfortunately, the enormous amount of rain we've had over the past month have led to major delays in the project. The ground needs to be graded and other work requiring dry ground to complete.
Today, I was able to secure a new target date for completion: the end of June. While this additional delay is sad news for many of our two- and four-legged friends, we understand that the rain delay could not be helped. We will continue to work with the Mayor's Office and the new Acting Director of Parks and Recreation, Dr. Ximena Hartsock, to get this project completed as quickly and efficiently as possible. Dr. Hartsock knows the park well, having served as the Principal for Ross Elementary in 2006, just a block from the parks.
DPR is working to update the Department's web site to reflect the new target completion date, as well as the sign at the dog park. Many thanks for your continued patience on this important project.
