Today 10.27.08

It's just 8 days until the election and things are going great! Today my street signs came in, and I'm putting some up tonight in time for the High Heel Race tomorrow night. My campaign chairman has graciously agreed to help me put them up. Watch for photos tomorrow!

On the policy side of things, I've had a few conversations about a potential business that's trying to locate in Dupont and some problems they've faced. More about that at an appropriate time. I've also been following the Tony Hunter case - there are some major issues there and I will continue to follow the case and post updates from time to time. There are major problems with how the case is being handled, and GLOV is working diligently on the issue. I'm also having some conversations with folks on the marriage equality issue, and intend to be helpful on that issue in the next Council Period.

I think I'll be canvassing for Mark Long this weekend, and on election day I'll be handing literature out for Councilmember Kwame Brown. I'm doing some thank you's for all of the people who have generously donated to my campaign as well.

More soon!

2008 At Large Endorsements

This year, DC voters have a slew of options when voting for At Large candidates. Six candidates qualified for the ballot, including a Democrat, a Republican, a Statehood-Green candidate, and three Independent candidates. Additionally, a current councilwoman who was defeated in the Republican primary is running a write-in campaign.

On Tuesday night the Dupont Circle ANC held a debate/forum in which all seven candidates participated. It was my first and only opportunity to compare and contrast all seven of them at the same time. And it was blatantly obvious who carried the evening.

Councilmember Kwame Brown was terrific on every issue. He was well spoken without sounding rehearsed, demonstrated leadership, and came across as knowledgeable and personable. On issue after issue I found myself agreeing with him. He has unequivocally earned himself another full term on the Council representing everyone throughout the city.

Coming in a close second, in my opinion, and miles ahead of the rest of the pack, independent candidate Mark Long amazed and excited me as few local politicians have.

Mr. Long provided thoughtful, deliberative answers to each and every question presented. He was respectful of his time allotment and cordial with the other members of the panel. He didn't tear his opponents down, even when they disagreed. Rather, he laid out his vision for the city, and it was apparent that his desire is to make D.C. a much better place for all of us to live, work and visit.

He grew up in Southeast DC and went to public school here. He has a professional background not only on energy and environmental issues, but also on educational issues, which are of paramount importance today.

What finally won the day for me was Mr. Long's answer to the question of whether or not he supports a new football or soccer stadium in DC (something I am adamantly opposed to, if it is structured the way the baseball stadium deal was). While candidate after candidate stated their fierce opposition to using city funds for a stadium project, Mr. Long replied with a measured, thoughtful approach to the issue. He stated that in a time of economic crisis and possible recession, he would not take ANY public works project off the table, including stadium projects. While I do not believe a stadium is the best use of public funds, I greatly respect and appreciate his answer, and know that he will bring the same thoughtfulness and deliberateness to the Council if elected.

So in addition to asking for your vote on November 4, I'm also asking you to vote to reelect Councilman Kwame Brown, and to elect to the council candidate Mark Long. Thank you for your consideration, and as always, questions, thoughts and concerns are always welcomed.

Respectfully,
Jack

Blade: Gays challenge gays in Dupont Circle ANC races

Following is the introduction to an article that ran in today's issue of The Washington Blade on Dupont Circle ANC contested races. You can access the full article HERE. The Dupont Current also ran an article this week, but am not able to provide a link/introduction to that article. The Current for some reason only reported on the race between Cm. Ramon Estrada and Doug Rogers, and didn't report on the race between Cm. Phil Carney and Joseph Rojakovick. I'm hopeful they do a follow up article on the other contested race to provide voters more information on the candidates in our neighborhood.

From The Blade:

Gay challengers are running against gay incumbents for the only two contested seats on the nine-member Dupont Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commission, with gay issues taking a back seat to the hot topic of two pending development projects.

The gays running in the Dupont Circle races are among 23 known gay candidates running for election or re-election to ANC seats throughout the city. Most are running unopposed.

Congress created the ANCs as part of the city’s home rule government in the early 1970s. They are comprised of unpaid elected officials who are charged with advising city officials and city regulatory agencies on issues of concern to neighborhoods.

ANCs don’t have specific regulatory powers, but agencies are instructed under the law to give “great weight” to their recommendations.

Long-time Dupont Circle observers have said the area’s high concentration of gay residents and gay businesses long ago brought about a harmonious mix of gays and straights. This prompted many gays to become involved in civic affairs, with some coming down on opposing sides of disputes regarding parking, noise and nightlife entertainment issues.

Quick Crime Update

I wasn't able to attend Tuesday night's monthly public safety meeting for our police service area (PSA 208), but I did trade emails with our PSA leadership with MPD to raise concerns about proper police coverage next week first during the High Heel Race on Tuesday the 28th, then with Halloween on Friday the 31st.

From our Sgt:
  • For the High Heel Race their will be an entire CDU platoon consisting of 1 Lieutenant, 3 Sergeants, 1 Master Patrol Officer and 22 Officers. There will also be officers along the route, conducting crime patrol in the periphery of the event and of course manning traffic posts.
  • For Halloween I believe their will be two CDU squads consisting of 2 Sergeants and either 14 or 16 officers to supplement man power in PSA 208.

I trust that this will be good coverage for those nights, though we could always use more coverage at events and during holidays like Halloween and July 4.

Coming Soon...

to a street corner near you! Campaign signs! I'm working on getting them printed, but they look like this:

A special thanks to my good friend Pat B. for donating the graphic design work on this, particularly since he's traveling for work right now and it's a PITA to do volunteer work when your actual work is busy busy busy. I hope to put them up this weekend!

Today 10.22.08

Lots of stuff going on now that we're getting closer and closer to the election...

On Monday night I helped organize and run a debate in which all seven candidates for the two at-large seats on the city council participated. I was the official timekeeper, though the credit for the success of the event goes to my fellow commissioners Bill Hewitt and Will Stephens as well as DCCA president Joel Lawson. Cm. Stephens and Mr. Lawson moderated the event.

The discussion was fairly reserved and very respectful. To me, the choice in two weeks was stark and clear: I have already endorsed Kwame Brown, who is a great leader in our city. He performed admirably, and I hope he is reelected to the council for another 4-year term.

Equally impressive was candidate Mark Long. He was thoughtful, deliberative, and exibited great leadership. He actually won me over by not completely agreeing with me. On a question of whether the city should build a new football or soccer stadium (something I am fiercely opposed to), he didn't stand with the myriad other candidates who adamantly said NO. He said that in a time of recession, we can't take any public works projects off the table. We would need to examine the benefits and drawbacks to the city, look at our budget carefully, and see what makes sense. I greatly respect his answer, and I will be voting for him in two weeks. I hope you will join me!

Finally I've been busy with campaign work. I'll be having a victory party with two of my fellow commissioners the evening of November 4 (email me for information: events@friendsofjack.com), and I'm working on getting street signs printed. Hopefully those will go up this weekend!

That's the big stuff for now. As always, call or email me with questions or concerns.

Stand Up for Kids

Last week I attended a fundraiser for Stand Up for Kids, a terrific organization in DC that is working hard to provide safe environments, shelter, and support services for homeless and street children in Washington. I hope you'll consider donating to the organization, and or supporting its efforts by volunteering. If you know children in need of Stand Up's services, I'm happy to help refer them to the organization and/or put them in touch with the right people at Stand Up.

Today 10.20.08

The weekend was busy, but not with a lot of ANC activity. I did spend most of the day yesterday volunteering for the DCCA Tour of Homes. Originally I was going to volunteer only early in the day, but ended up subbing for some volunteers who weren't able to make it.

I sent an email today to our PSA Lt. on some public safety issues today. The issues I raised were as follows:

1) I've invited Ed Solomon from the Georgetown ANC to attend the meeting to talk about MPD's new real-time notification service that Ed's ANC was instrumental in pushing for. MPD announced last week they're rolling it out across the city, and Dupont would be a great place for implementation of the Community Crime Alert Program.

2) There have been several attempted break-ins in the last couple of months in the ally immediately north of 1725 17th St., NW. Several residents who are on the alley have been impacted with attempted robberies (bike) and attempted break-ins. Most of these thwarted attempts have occurred during regular daylight hours. Do you have thoughts/suggestions for dealing with this? What can the neighbors be doing differently or better?

3) Can you provide an update of your plans for the high-heel race and for Halloween since it's on a Friday this year? Will there be extra units on duty? Again, anything that the residents can do different/better?

I also met last week with a community member last week to discuss some follow up on the library resolution our ANC passed two months ago. We're hoping other ANCs around the city pass similar resolutions to make the MLK library a true flagship library for the city.

Tony Hunter Arrest Press Release

This is from MPD. I'm trying to find out additional information on the "altercation" mentioned in the release to see what precipitated it. I'll update if necessary.

On October 15, 2008, members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPDC) Joint Fugitive Task force located and arrested 18 year old Robert Hanna, who was being sought pursuant to a District of Columbia Superior Court arrest warrant charging him with Voluntary Manslaughter, related to the death of Tony Randolph Hunter.

Members of the MPDC's Homicide Branch, particularly Detectives Jacqueline Middleton and Jed Worrell, along with members of the Joint Fugitive Task Force, worked tirelessly to ensure the capture of Mr. Hanna. Chief Lanier held a press conference this afternoon, during which she thanked members of the community who had cooperated with investigators and also the countless tips that were forwarded to investigators using the MPDC’s TIP line.

Of particular interest to members of the GLBT community, Chief Lanier stated the case was thoroughly reviewed by prosecutors at the United States Attorney’s Office and there is no evidence to support a hate crime enhancement. Furthermore, Chief Lanier indicated the initial suspected motive of robbery was eventually determined by investigators to not be correct and that the death of Mr. Hunter resulted from an altercation between Mr. Hunter and Mr. Hanna, during which Mr. Hunter suffered injuries which lead to his death.

Mr. Hanna will be presented in the District of Columbia Superior Court, at which time a judge will determine if he will be released or jailed pending the judicial process.

Today 10.15.08

Things are starting to get caught up a bit at work, so here's a bit of what I'm dealing with and working on for the greater Dupont Circle neighborhood:

The Dupont Circle ANC and Dupont Circle Citizens Association are hosting an at-large candidate forum on Monday the 20th. My colleagues on the Commission, Will Stephens and Bill Hewitt, along with DCCA President Joel Lawson have done most of the work, but I've helped to try to confirm Councilmember Kwame Brown. Councilmember Brown has endorsed me in my race, and I'm grateful to have his support!

A business in my district has been concerned - and rightfully so - that the intersection at the corner of 17th & R has been dug up multiple times over the last 12 months for repairs and utility work. In addition to being a safety hazzard for residents and a drain in businesses, it is a major city budget issue in my mind. The city has paid to replace sections of the road there three or four times in this fiscal year alone. I'm hoping to find out what emergency work needs to be done now that can't wait until the streetscape project breaks ground next year.

I'm working on the marriage equality issue and helping lay out a strategy for success in the near- to mid-term. Additionally on equality, I continue to be concerned at the crimes against the LGBT population, and other minority populations, in the District. I'm working closely with MPD and the Mayor's office of GLBT affairs on the issue. I've traded direct emails with Mayor Fenty on the issue as well.

There's a bit of follow up on the library issue that Commissioner Phil Carney and I worked on two months ago, so I'm trying to stay on top of that. I've also worked with DCCA Board Member Robin Diener on the DCCA House Tour - I'll be volunteering! I'll have more information about that up shortly. I'm also volunteering at the High Heel race, but y'all already knew that ;-)

Finally, my reelection is going very well. Just today I passed a key fundraising mark. I should have my street signs up in a week or so. I continue to be humbled by the generousity and support I've gotten from throughout the community - civic leaders, church leaders, young and old, new residents and lifetime DC residents alike. I look forward to working with ALL Dupont residents in the next two years to advance an agenda that will make our neighborhood better than ever!

Tony Hunter Murder Arrest Made

I've just learned that MPD has made an arrest in the murder of Tony Hunter. If you'll remember, Tony and a friend were on their way to BeBar when they were attacked and Tony was brutally beaten. He died 10 days later from his injuries. I attended the vigil for him, and continue to be concerned about the ongoing attacks against the LGBT community throughout the city.

I can't stress enough that we all need to help our friends and neighbors in need. If you see an attack occuring, call 911 immediately and get help. If you have information that may be relevant to police, please come forward. Together we can make our community a better and safer place for all.

Today 10.06.08

I had a very busy weekend, but enjoyable as well.

Friday night I was absolutely humbled when around 70 friends, neighbors and community leaders joined me at a fundraiser and birthday party for my reelection. The support and encouragement I've recieved from so many people has made me appreciate my position even more. I gave a short speech outlining my major issues, including public safety, smart growth and constituent services.

Also on Friday I initiated a discussion among the other commissioners about granting of public space for parking. Parking is at a premium in Dupont, and there are two requests to grant public space applications for those spots. I am concerned that the granting of this space isn't always necessary and doesn't serve the public good. Tomorrow night's discussion on this should be interesting.

Over the weekend I spent more time on the Utopia project, taking a tour of the area with Phyllis K., a long-time resident and advocate on the issue. The project developers are seeking four zoning variances for the project, and we'll discuss those tomorrow evening.

We are in dire need of Safeway/Giant gift cards. Some members have no income and live in a shelter or on the streets. Some live with relatives, but don’t get meals because they can’t purchase it or they are awaiting approvals of their benefits.

Michael just got an apartment, but he is lacking furniture. He is in need of a dinette set (seats two), sofa, coffee table, end tables and lamps so that he can enjoy his new place.

Warren needs a set of sheets (king size) for his bed. He also needs two end tables for his living room and matching nightstands for his bedroom. These items would complete his apartment and make it feel like home.

Gary has been working and just got his apartment after being homeless for 3 years. He needs a small refrigerator to keep his groceries fresh.

Michael needs a couch and chair because he had to get rid of his due to bed bugs. He would really like it if his grandchildren had somewhere to sit besides the floor when they came to visit him.

Martha who loves to sing and dance would really appreciate a stereo. She also needs a stand that can hold her TV, fish tank, and stereo.

Leonard needs 4 table top lamps for his living room and bedroom, a 27 inch television, and 2 rugs to fit (areas of 7x10 floor spaces). These items will make his home complete.

The Café Unit at the Clubhouse (one of our work training units) needs a hot dog machine because the one we are currently using burns the hotdogs.

Kim is living at her daughter’s home because all of her personal belongings were stolen at the halfway house where she was residing. She needs an air mattress and a TV to watch while she is home alone. She is also trying to prepare for winter and needs a winter coat (size Large), pants (size 12-14), shirts (size M-L), and pajamas (size Large).

Larry is getting settled in his apartment after years of being homeless. He needs a TV and a DVD player to keep him entertained when he is not at work.

Anthony needs a full or queen size bed (mattress and box spring). He has constant back pain and has been sleeping on a sleeper sofa. He also needs 4 chairs for his dinette table and some kitchen utensils including pots and pans, dishes, silverware, and cooking utensils.

Gwen needs a microwave because hers recently broke. She is physically disabled and is having trouble making meals without it.

Judith is very active in the community but finds it difficult to afford public transportation. She would like a bike (for a larger person) so that she can get around her neighborhood without taking the bus or metro.

Young Person’s Group provides a supportive social network for our young members (ages 18-30) while they work toward their educational and vocational goals. We would love to be able to plan more social activities in the community. In the past we have enjoyed going out to play pool, video games, bowling and going out to dinner and would very much appreciate any gift certificates to places in the community.

Sharron started taking classes at the University of DC. She would like to have a laptop to do her homework. She is also trying to loose weight and would appreciate a bike.

Sherman is in need of a winter coat (size 2XL). He is homeless and will need the coat to keep him warm.

Tonya would like to have a TV to relax and entertain herself.

Gebresalissie needs a full-size bed (mattress, box spring, and frame) and dresser. He just moved here from California and has no furniture in his home.

Today 10.03.08

This week has been busy but productive.

Last night I went to a debate watching party hosted by Phil A. Phil is a great Obama supporter, and will be hosting a meet and greet for Michael Brown next week that I plan to attend. Michael is running for At-Large Council as an independent. I'm looking forward to meeting Michael and hearing his views on equality, smart growth and city services.

I've had a couple of meetings and discussions in the last few days about the Utopia project at 14th & U. There are some concerns that the neighbors have expressed about the special exceptions that they're seeking for the project. I look forward to hearing more from both sides on this important issue.

On Wednesday night I attended a roundtable discussion with Councilmember Phil Mendelsen (At-Large) on public safety. I was able to speak briefly with Assistant Chief Groomes about the arrest that has been made in the hate crime in Adams Morgan over the summer. I hope it leads to additional arrests.

Yesterday I attended the DC Economic Partnership's annual luncheon at the Convention Center. It was a great event, and I got to spend a few minutes with Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) to talk about ongoing projects in DC. Jack will be at our ANC meeting next Tuesday, and will be asking Dupont which 3 city infrastructure projects are most important to us so that he can push them in his next term on the Council. If you have ideas or suggestions, please email me at jack@friendsofjack.com.

Lastly, I'm gearing up for a big event for my reelection tonight. My friends are hosting a small fundraiser for me so that I can put up some street signs and perhaps print some literature heading into the November elections. I'm very excited, and can't wait to see everyone tonight!
