About Jack

Jack was first elected to the Dupont Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commission in March 2008 during a special election to fill a vacancy. In a crowded field of candidates, he garnered 40% of the vote to capture his seat. He currently serves as the public safety liaison for the Commission.

Jack was inspired to run for the ANC in part because of his family's long history of involvement in local politics. His mother was vice president of his hometown school board and ran unsuccessfully for state legislature in South Dakota. His dad rebounded from a failed city council election to eventually join the council, serve as mayor, and then serve as president of the school board in Tea, SD, Jack's hometown.

Recently, Jack lead a successful fight against excessive taxi fare rates when the Mayor announced what would have been the highest metered taxi fares in the country. He also serves as President of the DC Dakotans, Vice President of the South Dakota State Society, Secretary-Treasurer of Q Street, and a block captain for the Dupont Circle Neighborhood Network.

Since winning his seat on the Commission, Jack has been an advocate for reliable city services, public safety, tenant rights and vibrant local businesses. If reelected to a full term on the Commission, he intends to push for full marriage rights and equality for all DC residents, while ensuring that the City meets the needs of his constituents. In particular, Jack will work closely with DDOT to ensure that the 17th Street redevelopment project causes minimal impact to his constituents, the businesses he represents, and the neighborhood at large.

Jack is currently a policy advisor at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, a top-15 government relations firm in Washington. In his free time he enjoys reading, cooking, and traveling to South Dakota to visit his family, including his 18-month-old niece, Remington.
